Mobile Communications Department, EURECOM, France
The Mobile Communications Department of EURECOM, Sophia-Antipolis, France, invites applications for a faculty position at the assistant professor level, in the general area of mobile networking, with a special interest for the emerging field of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). MEC (sometimes nicknamed Fog computing) revisits the fundamentals of wireless network design to provide cloud-computing like capabilities within the Radio Access Network, offering personalized services to users, better performance, and better experience by pushing data and its processing much closer to the end user (the edge of the network). Concepts of interest within MEC include (but are not limited to)
- Network Function Virtualization and Software Defined Wireless Networking,
- content-centric communication and edge storage,
- device-based computation and communication (e.g. D2D: device to device),
- proximity network (e.g. proximity social networks, geo-fencing, ad-hoc networks)
- network and user analytics.
We are looking for a candidate with a strong combined background in wireless and networking and a proven experience in one or more of the above research areas. Experiment- and implementation-driven approaches are welcome. The successful candidate will teach (graduate only) courses and is expected to develop an externally funded research group. A Ph.D. in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering is required.

Open PhD Position in Massive MIMO radar at Queen's University (Belfast, UK) and Université Paris-Est (Marne-la-Vallée, France)
This PhD thesis will be divided into a theoretical investigation (which will be carried out at ECIT laboratory (Queen’s University Belfast, UK) and an experimental implementation (which will be done at ESYCOM laboratory (Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, France). From a theoretical point of view, this project will seek to compare the performance of different array topologies and devise novel signal processing schemes, suitable for massive MIMO radar, to improve target information acquaintance and their robustness against jammers, as well as, design transmit beampattern schemes. Given that the number of targets will be much smaller than the total number of antennas, the target information will be spanning a low-rank subspace, which motivates the use of blind channel estimation schemes for massive MIMO radar. The developed processing techniques will be validated with measurement campaigns. An existing platform dedicated to MIMO radar will be upgraded and used to carry out real-time experiments.
Candidate profile: Since this PhD project would be part of the UK-France joint PhD programme of DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory) and DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement), only citizens of UK or French nationality are eligible to apply. Successful candidates should hold a Master of Science degree (or equivalent) on Electrical Engineering or Mathematics. A strong knowledge in signal processing and digital communications, as well as skills for experimentation are expected. A good level in English is required.

Vacancy for a Research Associate based at the University of York, UK
A vacancy has recently arisen for a Research Associate based at the University of York to work on the European Commission Framework 7 project ABSOLUTE, “Aerial Base Stations with Opportunistic Links for Unexpected & Temporary Events”, (www.absolute-project.eu).
The project is investigating development of a rapidly deployable wireless communications system based on LTE-A. This will incorporate an aerial platform based eNodeB base station, along with temporary terrestrial eNodeB infrastructure, to be deployed to restore service for example after disasters. The proposed network topology will be rapidly changing and will need to take into account existing local usage and requirements and also the availability of suitable radio spectrum. One of York’s roles in the project is to develop cognitive techniques that exploit learning, to better adapt the network and resources to local requirements.
This post is one of a number of appointments in support of this project.
The Research Associate will contribute to WP4 of the ABSOLUTE project: “Opportunistic Communications and Networking Solutions”, in which they will work on development flexible network architectures, including the cognitive topology management techniques and routing.
The post is full-time at 37 hours per week, and is available for a period of up to 28 months (depending on salary at appointment).
For more information on how to apply please check here
